How Rudyard Kipling Turned Pench Stories into The Jungle Book

When we talk about famous storybooks, The Jungle Book always comes to mind. Many people around the World know about “The Jungle Book.” This book is especially famous among kids for the characters of Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera, and Shere Khan. Children enjoy reading this book, and even adults remember it from their childhood. Adults like this book a lot, and it is one of the most loved storybooks ever written. But many people do not know something very interesting - the world of The Jungle Book was inspired by a real forest in India. This forest is Pench National Park, which is in the Madhya Pradesh state of India. 

Pench National Park is a beautiful jungle filled with tall trees, green plants, water bodies, and a lot of wild animals. Long ago, people used to live near the park, and they told stories about the forest, animals, and brave kids who grew up close to nature. These stories became famous, and everyone told them to different people. Later, these stories reached the ears of a writer named Rudyard Kipling, and these helped him to write about the Wonderful World of Mowgli.

Who Was Rudyard Kipling?

Rudyard Kipling was a British writer born in India. He spent most of his childhood years and early life in the country. Because of this, he knew how Indian forests, animals, villages, and people looked and lived. He loved listening to stories and learning about different places. India had a special place in his heart.

Rudyard Kipling did not live in Pench, but he heard a lot of stories about the forest and wildlife of this park. He got to know about the stories of the park from the travelers, forest officers, hunters, and villagers. At that time, people used to tell stories as a way to share knowledge about nature.

As a listener, he liked listening to stories, and he found those tales very interesting and exciting.  He felt that these stories had something magical and were connected to real beauty - not fairy tales. These stories also promoted the connection between nature and animals. 

How Kipling First Learned About Pench

Kipling came to know about Pench mainly through a book called "The Seonee" written by Robert Armitage Sterndale. This book has information about the animals, forests, and people living in the Seoni region, which is very close to Pench. Sterndale wrote about the real experiences, and he also included the stories about the children that villagers used to tell people. He added the details about how the animals behaved in the wild. 

Rudyard Kipling read this book by Robert Armitage Sterndale, and he became very interested in this area. He imagined the forests, water bodies, trees, and the wildlife, and he somehow thought that this was the perfect place for a story that says a lot about nature. 

After reading the book, he went to Pench and spoke with the locals of the area. He gained information about the area and even heard local tales about wild animals, brave children, and the deep green jungle. These stories and information gave him a lot of ideas. Slowly, he turned those ideas into a story - a story about a little boy raised by wolves. And then, the little boy of the story became famous worldwide as Mowgli.

Local Stories That Inspired Mowgli

Before the famous book The Jungle Book was written, the villagers of Pench used to tell stories to people. These stories were about the children who wandered into the forest or lived close to animals. Some stories were about brave kids who knew about the Jungle better than anyone. There were also stories about wolves protecting small children.

Today, these stories sound like legends, but they were real information about the people who lived near the area of Pench National Park. These stories gave Kipling the idea of creating a wonderful place and to write about the character of “Mowgli.” Other than Mowgli, characters like Baloo, Bagheera, Shera Khan, Akela, and Kaa were also inspired by real animals found in Pench.  

Baloo was similar to Sloth Bears as they have a calm, loving, and caring personality. Bagheera was inspired by the leopards and panthers as they move silently, are strong, and smart. Bagheera in the book also shows these qualities. He becomes Mowgli’s guide and protector. And, the famous Shere Khan was inspired by tigers, which are powerful animals. Akela was inspired by the Indian Wolves that are found in Pench, as they live in packs and follow strict group rules.  Last but not least, the large snakes were an inspiration for the character of Kaa, who is wise, old, and strong. 

All these animals helped Kipling to write a Jungle story that felt real. He did not make the animals act like humans. Instead, he showed their natural behavior in a simple and understandable way. When he was writing the book, he didn't want to make any fairy tale. He wanted to show the real Jungle and also that even after being a dangerous spot, the Jungle can still teach people lessons about life, friendship, and courage.

After “The Jungle Book” was published, it became famous very quickly. Children in different countries read it and fell in love with the characters. Later, many cartoons, shows, and movies were also produced, and the story became even more popular as a result. Many people still don’t know about the Pench National Park, but they know Mowgli.
